Hi – I’m Sandra

Great to read all the interesting introductions.

So here’s a bit about me……

My involvement with community work was completely unplanned and accidental but turned out to be one of the most rewarding things I have done with the exception of being a mum which is my main priority and which led me to be inspired to improve the facilities for young people in the community in which we live. The local recreational ground had fallen into a state of disrepair and deterioration and was nothing but a hazardous space with little investment for at least 40 years.

Three years ago I started a community group The Friends of Hopwood Park, we are now a registered charity and with the help of Community First and other funding bids we have made significant improvements to our local green space providing improved facilities for children which has snowballed into many avenues benefitting the whole community including the local primary school, playgroup, Scouting Group and bowling club.

Our projects and events have seen the community come together inspiring young people to get involved and take an interest and have pride in their environment. A wild flower garden has been our show piece for the last three years and we are now aiming to regenerate a bus shelter/toilet block to turn it into a community café.

For 7 years I have been a freelance medical PA/proof-reader, prior to which I worked in Women & Children’s Services in the NHS for 20 years.

I thrive on a challenge. I think Just Act and the forum is a great idea and am looking forward to passing on all the knowledge I have gained to other enthusiastic volunteers.
