Hi, I’m Duncan, living in what is laughingly known as Sunny Clacton! This is one of the recognised deprived Coastal resorts and so we hosted Nicky Campbell on the Radio 5 Live Breakfast show at the end of January, We deal with extreme deprivation, health, drugs, loneliness and associated problems. I run the Enfold Project at Pier Avenue Baptist Church which serves the local community by offering Community Money Advice, Child Contact Centre, Computer/IT Classes, Work Clubs and especially the main Project which offers a cooked breakfast every Thursday morning, together with showering opportunities to the homeless, disadvantaged and vulnerable adults in the area, and are supported by Nurses, Benefit advice and housing groups and the Volunteer Centre. Our numbers are continually increasing and now average between 55 – 65 each week, occasionally shooting up into the 70’s.
The life expectancy in Pier Ward where we are based is 18.1 years LOWER than in Saffron Walden, which is just on the other side of our county of Essex. The Enfold Project is regarded as a ‘signature’ project by both Essex County and Tendring District Councils.
This is part of the support work in the town, which includes a soup run offering food every night of the year – including Christmas Day!
