Access Key Shortcuts

Access keys are helpful keyboard shortcuts on a website that give a keyboard user quick and easy access to all the main areas of the site.

Both Windows and Macintosh computers require that a Modifier Key is pressed in addition to the Access Key. More importantly, Modifier Keys vary depending on browser and operating system.

Below is a list of Modifier Keys that should be used with each browser:

Windows

  • Chrome: Hold the ALT key and select the number of the Access Key
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer: Hold the ALT key and select the number of the Access Key, press ENTER
  • Firefox: Hold the SHIFT and ALT key and select the number of the Access Key
  • Safari: Hold the ALT key and select the number of the Access Key

Macintosh Computers

  • Safari: Hold the CTRL key and select the number of the Access Key
