How did we get from the Third Sector Declaration on Climate Change to the JustAct! website?
In late 2008 Capacity Global carried out a review of the Declaration to gain a better understanding of the Declaration's role in supporting action on climate change by Third Sector organisations. It found that, while many organisations recognised that climate change had social and environmental impacts, most survey respondents did not identify themselves as environmental organisations.
The review also uncovered a demand for additional tools to help organisations meet their commitments under the Declaration. One respondent commented:
"I would like to see an action plan template and model action plan on the website – this would make it easier for an organisation to achieve."
As a result, a group of organisations came together to develop tools for the Declaration and review the text - including Capacity Global, the Community Development Foundation, bassac, MakeMode and a representative from the Nottingham Declaration.
Ultimately, this led to the creation of the JustAct! website and renewed version of the Declaration drafted by Capacity Global.
What will JustAct! enable us to achieve?
JUSTACT will enable us to tap into a supportive community of other like-minded, leading organisations acting on climate change out of our commitment to social justice. Together, we will learn from individual and collective experience, build up a resource of information, tools, resources and actions to help us create a fair and sustainable future.
JUSTACT will enable signatories to work together to advocate, lobby and support policies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions at the same time as addressing issues of environmental and social justice.
JUSTACT will help Third Sector organisations find the focus, information, supportive community and collective power we need to bring the Third Sector Declaration On Climate Change to life. The more organisations who Sign Up, Act Up and Speak Up, the better our chances of safeguarding a just and sustainable future.
Sign Up. Act Up. Speak Up.
